Kitsch is the absolute denial of excrement. Kundera defined kitsch as the aesthetic ideal in which everything unacceptable about human existence is excluded from view. Political kitsch produces totalitarianism; sentimental kitsch produces the lie of universal emotional agreement. The novelist's task is to tear holes in the curtain of kitsch, to show what it conceals — not through preaching but through the ironic examination of characters who live within its spell.

The unbearable lightness of existence arises from the fact that we live only once. Because life cannot be rehearsed, every decision is made in ignorance of its consequences, and no experience can be compared against the alternative. This unrepeatable singularity makes life either unbearably light, because nothing has weight, or unbearably heavy, because every moment is final and irreversible.
