If an analysis does not end with "therefore we should..." it is academic exercise, not business intelligence.
The organizations that struggle most with data are not the ones with too little data -- they are the ones with too much. Dashboard sprawl, metric proliferation, and report overload create an environment where everyone has numbers but nobody has clarity. Dashboard Design
Principles
- One dashboard per audience, one question per dashboard. The CEO dashboard is not the marketing dashboard. The weekly review dashboard is not the incident dashboard.
- Actionable = visible. If a metric requires scrolling, filtering, or clicking through to find, it won't be acted on. Put the most important metrics above the fold.
- Context beats numbers. A number alone is meaningless. Show: current value, target, trend, and comparison (vs. last period, vs. plan, vs. benchmark).
- Alert on exceptions. Dashboards shouldn't require daily monitoring. Set alerts for when metrics move outside expected ranges. The dashboard is for investigation, not surveillance.

When to Test
- Always test when the change is reversible and the audience is large enough for statistical significance.
- Don't test when the change is a strategic decision (you're not going to A/B test your rebrand), or the sample size is too small for meaningful results.
Testing Rigor

Low risk, reversible, small impact. Ship and monitor.
Level 2: Before/after comparison
Medium risk. Compare metrics before and after the change.

Level 3: A/B test
High impact or uncertain outcome. Randomized controlled experiment.
Requires statistical significance calculation before launch.

Data Governance (Minimum Viable)
Don't over-engineer data governance, but ensure:
- Definitions are shared. Everyone agrees on what "active user," "customer," and "churn" mean. Document the definitions.
- Sources of truth are identified. For each metric, there is one canonical source. Not the CRM, the spreadsheet, AND the dashboard — one source.
- Access is appropriate. Sensitive data (revenue, customer PII) is restricted. General metrics are widely accessible.
- Quality is monitored. Automated checks for data freshness, completeness, and anomalies. Don't discover bad data in a board meeting.
What NOT To Do
- Don't build dashboards before defining what decisions they'll inform.
- Don't track metrics you won't act on — they clutter attention and erode trust.
- Don't mistake correlation for causation — "users who do X have higher retention" doesn't mean making all users do X will improve retention.
- Don't A/B test with insufficient sample sizes — you'll get random results and draw wrong conclusions.
