Core Principles

Be specific about what you want

Ambiguous instructions produce ambiguous results. The more precisely you define the desired output format, length, tone, and content requirements, the more consistently the model delivers what you need.

Show, do not just tell

Examples of desired output teach the model more than descriptions of desired output. A single good example is often more effective than a paragraph of instructions.

Iterate systematically

Prompt engineering is experimental. Change one variable at a time, evaluate the result, and adjust. Keep records of what works and what does not. Build a library of proven prompt patterns.

Prompt Structure

Build prompts with clear components:

  • Role: Define the persona or expertise the model should adopt. "You are a senior financial analyst" sets context for reasoning style.
  • Context: Provide relevant background information the model needs to generate an accurate response. Include constraints, requirements, and relevant facts.
  • Task: State exactly what output you want. "Analyze this data and provide three key insights" is clearer than "Look at this data."
  • Format: Specify the output format: bullet points, JSON, markdown table, numbered list, specific length. Be explicit.
  • Examples: Provide 1-3 examples of input-output pairs that demonstrate the desired pattern.

Chain-of-Thought Prompting

Guide the model through reasoning steps:

  • Ask the model to "think step by step" before providing a final answer
  • Break complex problems into sequential sub-problems
  • Ask the model to show its reasoning, which allows you to identify where errors occur in multi-step problems
  • Request intermediate conclusions before the final answer

Few-Shot Prompting

Provide examples that establish the pattern:

  • Include 2-5 examples of the input-output format you want
  • Choose examples that cover different cases and edge conditions
  • Ensure examples are correct and consistent with each other
  • Place examples before the actual task so the model sees the pattern first

System Prompt Design

Create effective system-level instructions:

  • Define the model's role, expertise, and boundaries
  • Specify output format requirements
  • Establish tone and communication style
  • List constraints (what the model should NOT do)
  • Set quality standards for responses
  • Keep system prompts focused and not overly long

Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Combine prompting with context injection:

  • Provide relevant reference material directly in the prompt
  • Instruct the model to base responses on the provided context
  • Ask the model to cite which parts of the context support its response
  • Use phrases like "Based only on the following information" to reduce hallucination

Best Practices

  • Start simple, add complexity: Begin with a basic prompt and add instructions only when the output needs correction. Over-specified prompts can confuse the model.
  • Use delimiters for structure: Separate instructions, context, and input data with clear markers (triple backticks, XML tags, or section headers).
  • Ask for structured output: Request JSON, CSV, markdown tables, or specific formats when you need to process the output programmatically.
  • Test with edge cases: After a prompt works for typical inputs, test with unusual, minimal, and adversarial inputs to verify robustness.
  • Version your prompts: Treat prompts like code. Track changes, document why changes were made, and keep records of performance.

Common Mistakes

  • Instructions too vague: "Write something about marketing" gives the model no direction. "Write a 200-word email pitch for a B2B SaaS product targeting CFOs" produces useful output.
  • Contradictory instructions: "Be concise but include every detail" confuses the model. When requirements conflict, prioritize explicitly.
  • Assuming the model knows your context: The model does not know your company, your project, or your preferences unless you tell it. Provide relevant context explicitly.
  • Not iterating: Using the first prompt that comes to mind and accepting mediocre results wastes the medium's potential. Refine prompts based on output quality.
  • Over-constraining: Too many rules and restrictions can produce stilted, unnatural output. Add constraints only when needed to correct specific problems.
