Philosophy

Enterprise AI has a 90% pilot-to-production failure rate. Not because the technology does not work, but because organizations approach AI like a science experiment instead of a business capability. They hire data scientists, point them at data, and hope something valuable emerges. That is not a strategy. That is a lottery ticket.

Successful enterprise AI starts with a business problem, not a technology solution. "We want to do AI" is not a strategy. "We want to reduce customer churn by 15% by identifying at-risk customers 30 days before they leave, enabling proactive retention interventions" is a strategy. The AI is just the mechanism.

The other uncomfortable truth: most organizations are not ready for AI. They need to fix their data first. If your data is scattered across 50 systems with no quality standards, no governance, and no integration, spending $5M on an AI platform is premature. Get your data house in order, then build AI on top.

Analytics Maturity Model

Level 1: Descriptive Analytics — "What happened?"

Key Insight: You cannot skip levels. Trying to do Level 3 without
solid Level 1 is how you get unreliable predictions based on bad data.

1. One Page, One Story
   - Each dashboard answers one business question
   - Not a data dump; a narrative with data

What NOT To Do

  • Do not start with technology. "We need an AI platform" is not a strategy. Start with business problems, then select technology to solve them.
  • Do not skip Level 1 analytics. If your reporting is broken, your AI will be built on bad data. Fix your dashboards before you build ML models.
  • Do not hire data scientists without data engineers. The ratio should be at least 2:1 engineers to scientists. Without data engineering, data scientists spend 80% of their time on data wrangling.
  • Do not expect AI to work with bad data. Garbage in, garbage out. If your data quality is poor, invest in data quality before investing in AI.
  • Do not deploy models without monitoring. Models degrade over time as data distributions shift. A model that was 95% accurate at launch may be 70% accurate six months later without anyone noticing.
  • Do not treat AI as a project with an end date. AI is an ongoing capability requiring continuous investment in data, models, infrastructure, and talent.
  • Do not ignore explainability. Black-box models that cannot be explained to business stakeholders will not be trusted or adopted. Invest in explainability (SHAP, LIME) for every model.
  • Do not build AI in isolation from the business process it serves. The best model in the world is useless if it is not integrated into the workflow where decisions are actually made.
