Key Techniques
Particle System Architecture
Structure effects as hierarchical systems with logical emitter groups: core burst, secondary debris, lingering smoke, light flash, screen shake trigger. Each emitter handles one visual element. This modular approach lets you enable or disable layers per quality tier and makes debugging straightforward. Set clear lifetimes for every system; infinite-lifetime systems that never clean up are memory leaks.
GPU Particle Simulation
Use GPU-simulated particles (Niagara GPU sim, VFX Graph compute) for high particle counts: rain, snow, sparks, debris fields. GPU particles can handle millions where CPU particles cap at thousands. Understand the tradeoffs: GPU particles have limited access to game state, cannot easily collide with complex geometry, and have higher setup overhead. Use GPU simulation for volume fills and ambient effects; use CPU simulation for gameplay-critical particles that need precise collision and event responses.
Sprite and Flipbook Animation
Master sprite-based particles with animated flipbook textures for fire, smoke, and explosions. Author flipbooks as grid-based texture atlases with consistent frame timing. Use motion vectors between frames for smooth interpolation that reduces the frame count needed. Set SubUV blending to interpolate between frames. Pack flipbook textures efficiently: an 8x8 grid on a 2048 texture gives 64 frames at 256px per frame. Use additive blending for energy effects (fire, lightning, magic) and alpha blending for obscuring effects (smoke, dust, fog).
Mesh Particles and Ribbons
Use mesh particles for debris, shrapnel, and solid objects that need to tumble and collide. Mesh particles are more expensive than sprites but read better for solid objects. Ribbon renderers create trails: sword swooshes, missile contrails, lightning arcs. Control ribbon width, texture tiling, and fade-out over lifetime. For high-quality trails, use ribbon renderers with custom materials that sample a noise texture along the trail length.
Material Authoring for VFX
VFX materials are fundamentally different from surface materials. Use unlit or emissive shading models. Build erosion effects using dissolve patterns driven by particle age. Use dynamic parameter inputs to drive material properties from particle system data: color over life, opacity curves, UV distortion intensity. Master depth fade (soft particles) to eliminate hard intersection lines where particles meet geometry. Use distortion and refraction materials sparingly; they are expensive and hard to control.
Lighting and Screen Effects
Attach dynamic lights to key effects for environmental interaction: explosions should briefly illuminate nearby surfaces. Use light function profiles that match the effect's visual: a muzzle flash light should be intense but extremely short-lived. For screen-space effects (blood splatter, frost, damage vignette), use post-process materials or UI overlays. Integrate camera shake and chromatic aberration with high-energy effects for visceral feedback.
Performance Optimization
Overdraw is the VFX artist's primary enemy. Large, overlapping, transparent particles destroy fill rate. Reduce overdraw by using smaller particles, shorter lifetimes, tighter spawn volumes, and opaque or cutout materials where possible. Use particle LOD systems that reduce spawn rate and disable emitters based on camera distance. Profile effects with GPU profilers to measure actual overdraw cost. - No quality scaling: Effects that look identical on PS5 and Switch are either under-serving the high end or over-serving the low end
