2. Log each object's material, form, colour and any text, using the templates above.
3. Log building features separately: roof, wall, window, shutter, balcony, cooling, security, roof-top fixtures.
4. Identify the tightest regional clue among them (a chain store, a utility name on a cover, a street sign design) and treat everything else as consistency checks.
5. Cross-check the clues against each other for the same region; an American hydrant beside a Japanese pole is a film set or a mistake.
6. Determine the earliest plausible date from the newest infrastructure visible.
7. Feed the result into the search area definition: region, settlement type (urban core, suburb, village), and the specific fixed objects to look for in satellite and street-level imagery.

Core Principles

Utilities are local monopolies. A power company, a water utility and a municipality buy from a small set of suppliers to a fixed specification. Their hardware is uniform within their area and different outside it.

Building traditions follow climate, material and law. Roof pitch follows snow and rain; wall material follows local geology and cost; window design follows heat, cold and building codes. Read the constraints behind the style, not just the style.

Infrastructure dates the image. A fibre cabinet, a 5G mast, an LED street light retrofit or a new kerb standard bounds the earliest date the frame could have been taken.

Weak clues multiply. No single pole design is unique, but a pole type, a hydrant type, a kerb colour and a chain store together can be unique to one country and often one region.

Utility Poles and Power Lines

Record: material, cross-section, taper, crossarm arrangement, number of conductors, transformer type and position, insulator colour and type, guy wires, step bolts, labels and stencilled numbers.

Insulators: brown or grey porcelain pin and post insulators dominate North American distribution; white porcelain in Japan; toughened-glass suspension discs (green-tinted) on high-voltage lines across Europe, Russia and much of Latin America; grey polymer composite on newer lines everywhere. High-voltage pylons differ by country in silhouette (number of crossarms, symmetry, single or double circuit, tubular versus lattice) and are visible from far away, which makes them useful for skyline matching.

Road Surfaces, Kerbs and Pavements

  • Concrete slab carriageways with visible transverse joints: Belgium (notably patchy), sections of German Autobahn, much of the United States, older Polish roads.
  • Clinker brick streets in red-brown and red asphalt cycle paths: the Netherlands.

  • Kerb painting: black-and-white stripes at junctions and no-parking zones across Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Georgia and the Middle East; red-and-white for no stopping in Israel and much of Latin America; blue-and-white for paid parking in Israel; yellow kerb paint for no parking in Spain; red kerbs for fire lanes in the United States; yellow lines painted on the road rather than the kerb in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.
  • Kerb profile: rolled kerbs in North American suburbs; tall granite kerbs in Paris and older British streets; low concrete kerbs with drainage slots in Japan; no kerb at all with open concrete drains in Southeast Asia and parts of Latin America.

Street Furniture

Fire hydrants: above-ground barrel hydrants with two or three outlets in the United States and Canada, where bonnet and cap colours indicate flow class under NFPA 291 (light blue for the highest class, then green, orange, red for the lowest); red pillar hydrants with one large and two small outlets in France; underground hydrants marked by a yellow "H" plate in the United Kingdom, by a white plate with a red border and a large "H" in Germany, by a red sign in Japan and by "ПГ" signs in Russia; mostly underground with yellow marker posts in Australia.

Manhole covers: read every word cast into them. Japanese covers carry city crests and are often painted. German covers name the city or the utility. British covers carry foundry names and standards markings. American covers frequently read "Neenah Foundry" or "EJ" (East Jordan). French covers often read "PAM" (Pont-à-Mousson). Russian covers carry single-letter codes for the network (В water, К sewer, ГТС telephone). Covers cast in India and China are exported worldwide, so a "Made in India" cover is evidence of a supply chain, not a country.

Postboxes: red pillar boxes in the United Kingdom, green in Ireland, blue in the United States and Russia, red in Canada, Japan, Australia, India, Italy and Portugal, yellow in Germany, France, Spain, Sweden and Brazil, orange in the Netherlands, green in China.

Street name signs: blue enamel with a green border and white letters in Paris; black on white with the borough name in London; green with white letters in New York; marble plaques in Rome; ceramic pictorial tiles in Madrid; azulejo tiles in Lisbon; blue-and-white address plates on poles in Japan.

Traffic signals: horizontal signal heads in Japan (with a blue-green "go" lens) and in Texas, Florida, Wisconsin and several other US states; signals on mast arms over the carriageway across North America; small driver-height repeater signals in Germany, the Netherlands and Central Europe; pedestrian figures that are city-specific, such as Berlin's Ampelmännchen.

Worked Example

A protest video shows a wide street with black-and-white striped kerbs at a junction, a wooden utility pole standing on a concrete stub, glass disc insulators on a line crossing the road behind, a five-storey panel apartment block with glazed-in balconies, a manhole cover in the foreground with a large "К", and a shop with a green sign reading "Пятёрочка".

  • Black-and-white kerbs, a pole on a concrete stub and glazed balconies each say "former Soviet Union".
  • The Cyrillic "К" cover follows Russian utility marking.
  • Pyaterochka is a Russian chain that operates only in Russia.
  • The panel block says a district built between the late 1950s and the 1980s; the shop sign in the current Pyaterochka livery says the image is not older than that livery.
  • Search area: a Russian town or city district of Soviet-era five-storey housing on a wide street with a junction; look in satellite imagery for the block outline and the overhead line crossing, and in Yandex Panoramas for the shop.

Checklist

Common Mistakes

  • Reading a style as a place: "Mediterranean" villas exist in Florida and Queensland; Tudor half-timbering exists in every anglophone suburb.
  • Ignoring the text on covers, cabinets and poles, which is usually the most specific evidence in the frame.
  • Treating exported goods as local: manhole covers, buses and prefabricated cabins travel.
  • Forgetting the overhead-line negative: a residential street with no wires is itself a strong clue for Germany, the Netherlands, Britain and Singapore.
  • Assuming a chain's presence from its home country alone. Tesco is in Central Europe; 7-Eleven is on four continents; Carrefour has left several markets.
  • Using a retired livery or brand as a current clue without noting the date implication.

Limits

  • New-build districts, industrial estates and international hotel zones converge on a global style with little regional signal.
  • Rural buildings in remote regions may follow traditions shared across borders (the Pamirs, the Sahel, the Andes) and need vegetation and terrain to separate.
  • Chain store and brand knowledge decays within a few years; maintain the table from current sources rather than from memory.
  • Infrastructure narrows to a region or a city type. The street-level fix still comes from imagery cross-referencing.
