Card Combinations — The Core Skill

Lenormand's power lies in reading cards in pairs and chains. A single card is a word; a combination is a sentence.

How to Combine

  • Read left to right (or the first card modifies the second).
  • The first card is the noun/subject; the second card is the adjective/modifier (or vice versa — practice both).
  • In chains of 3+, read as a flowing sentence.

Example Combinations

PairInterpretation
Rider + LetterNews arrives in writing; an important email or message
Heart + RingCommitted love; engagement; marriage
Coffin + CloverAn ending brings luck; fortunate closure
Fox + SnakeDouble deception; be very cautious about who to trust
Bear + FishFinancial power; strong investment; a wealthy figure
Mountain + KeyA solution to the obstacle; the block is about to unlock
Mice + HeartEroding love; anxiety about a relationship
Stars + BookHidden knowledge revealed; studying something inspiring
Ship + HouseMoving house; travel home; international real estate
Child + SunA happy new beginning; a joyful child; small success
Whip + BirdsHeated argument; repetitive quarreling; vigorous discussion
Stork + TowerCareer change; institutional transformation; promotion
Dog + CoffinEnd of a friendship; a loyal person departs
Garden + MoonPublic recognition; fame; emotional social event
Clouds + CrossroadsConfused about a decision; unclear options

Mirroring and Knighting (Advanced)

In the Grand Tableau, additional reading techniques include:

  • Mirroring: Cards equidistant from the center reflect each other.
  • Knighting: Reading cards in an L-shape (chess knight's move) from a significator for additional information.

Spreads

Three-Card Line

The simplest Lenormand spread. Read as a sentence: Card 1 + Card 2 + Card 3.

Five-Card Line

A fuller sentence. The center card (3) is the focus; cards 1-2 are the context before, cards 4-5 are the outcome or development.

Nine-Card Box (3x3)

123
456
789
  • Card 5: The central theme.
  • Row 1 (top): What is above / what is on the querent's mind.
  • Row 2 (middle): The present / what is active.
  • Row 3 (bottom): What underlies / foundation / subconscious.
  • Column 1 (left): The past.
  • Column 2 (center): The present focus.
  • Column 3 (right): The future.
  • Diagonals and combinations add further layers.

Grand Tableau (Full 36-Card Spread)

The signature Lenormand spread. All 36 cards are laid out in a grid (typically 4 rows of 8, with 4 remaining cards as a base row, or 4 rows of 9).

Reading the Grand Tableau:

  1. Locate the significator (Man or Woman card for the querent).
  2. What is near the significator — these are the most relevant influences.
  3. What is far from the significator — these are distant or less pressing.
  4. What is behind (to the left of) the significator — the past.
  5. What is ahead (to the right of) — the future.
  6. What is above — what the querent is conscious of, or what looms over them.
  7. What is below — what underlies the situation, the foundation.
  8. Houses: Each position in the GT corresponds to one of the 36 cards (position 1 = Rider's house, etc.). The card that falls in a house is read in combination with that house's meaning.
  9. Corners: The four corner cards frame the overall energy.

Significator Cards

  • Card 28 (Man): Represents the male querent or a significant male.
  • Card 29 (Woman): Represents the female querent or a significant female.
  • In non-binary or same-sex readings, the querent chooses which card represents them, or both may represent different people.
  • The significator is not pre-selected — it falls where it falls in the spread, and its position is interpreted.

Conducting a Lenormand Reading (AI Method)

  1. Ask the querent for their question or area of focus.
  2. Determine the appropriate spread (3-card for quick, 9-card for moderate depth, Grand Tableau for comprehensive).
  3. Simulate a random draw from 36 cards (no repeats within a single reading).
  4. Present the cards with names and positions.
  5. Read in combinations — this is the essential Lenormand technique. Do not interpret cards in isolation.
  6. For Grand Tableau: locate the significator and read proximity, directionality, and house placements.
  7. Identify the overall narrative — Lenormand tells a concrete story about events and circumstances.
  8. Offer practical, situation-focused guidance.
  9. Include the disclaimer.
