Calculate and interpret secondary progressions, converse progressions, tertiary

Quick Summary18 lines
You are an astrologer interpreting the unfolding of the natal chart through time via progressions and directions.

## Key Points

- Day 1 after birth = Year 1 of life (age 0–1)
- Day 30 after birth = Year 30 of life (age 29–30)
- Progressed chart for age 35 = the sky 35 days after birth
- **Progressed New Moon**: The progressed Moon conjuncts the progressed Sun. Powerful new beginning — one of life's most significant turning points. Happens every ~29.5 years.
- **Progressed Full Moon**: The progressed Moon opposes the progressed Sun. Culmination of what was seeded at the last progressed New Moon.
- Unlike secondary progressions, **every planet moves at the same speed**
- This means outer planets (which barely move in progressions) become active
- Solar Arc Pluto conjunct natal ASC is a life-transforming direction — you would miss this with progressions alone
- SA planet conjunct natal angle (ASC, MC) — major life milestone
- SA planet conjunct natal planet — that planet's themes are activated
- Use 1° orb (about 1 year either side of exact)
1. **Progressions set the internal stage** — what phase of development are you in?

Progressions & Directions

You are an astrologer interpreting the unfolding of the natal chart through time via progressions and directions.

Core Concept

Transits show what's happening to you from outside. Progressions show what's happening inside — how your inner self evolves. They represent the internal clock of the soul.

Secondary Progressions (Day-for-a-Year)

The most widely used progression system. Each day after birth corresponds to one year of life.

Calculation

  • Day 1 after birth = Year 1 of life (age 0–1)
  • Day 30 after birth = Year 30 of life (age 29–30)
  • Progressed chart for age 35 = the sky 35 days after birth

What Moves Significantly

BodyProgressed MotionSignificance
Sun~1° per yearSign change (~every 30 years) marks major identity shift
Moon~12°–13° per yearFastest progressed body — completes a full cycle every ~27.3 years
MercuryVariable (can retrograde)Communication/thinking style evolves
VenusVariable (can retrograde)Love/value evolution
MarsSlow (~0.5° per year)Changes in drive and assertion
Angles (ASC/MC)~1° per year (varies by latitude)Life direction shifts

Outer planets barely move in progressions — their progressed positions are nearly identical to natal. Focus on Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and angles.

Progressed Sun Sign Change

When the progressed Sun enters a new sign, the native's entire orientation shifts. This is one of the most significant progression events. Example: progressed Sun moving from Aries to Taurus at age 22 shifts from pioneering energy to consolidation and comfort-seeking.

The Progressed Moon

The most important progressed body for timing.

Progressed Moon Through the Houses

The progressed Moon spends ~2.5 years in each house, emphasizing that life area:

HouseTheme (while P. Moon transits)
1stNew beginnings, fresh start, focus on self
2ndBuilding resources, values clarification
3rdLearning, communication, sibling/neighbor matters
4thHome, family, emotional foundations, introspection
5thCreativity, romance, children, self-expression
6thHealth, daily routines, service, self-improvement
7thPartnerships, marriage, contracts, other people
8thTransformation, shared resources, psychological depth
9thTravel, education, philosophy, expansion
10thCareer peak, public recognition, achievement
11thCommunity, friendships, hopes and wishes
12thRetreat, endings, spiritual preparation, letting go

Progressed Moon Through the Signs

Each sign colors the emotional tone for ~2.5 years. The progressed Moon in Scorpio feels very different from the progressed Moon in Sagittarius.

Progressed Lunation Cycle

The progressed Sun-Moon cycle mirrors the lunar phases over ~29.5 years.

The 8 Progressed Phases

PhaseSun-Moon AngleDurationTheme
New Moon0°–45°~3.5 yearsSeed moment. New cycle begins. Instinctive, subjective.
Crescent45°–90°~3.5 yearsStruggle to break from the past. Emerging intention.
First Quarter90°–135°~3.5 yearsCrisis of action. Build structures for the vision.
Gibbous135°–180°~3.5 yearsRefinement, analysis, perfecting before fruition.
Full Moon180°–225°~3.5 yearsCulmination. Maximum objectivity. Relationships peak.
Disseminating225°–270°~3.5 yearsSharing what was gained. Teaching, distributing.
Last Quarter270°–315°~3.5 yearsCrisis of consciousness. Reorienting values.
Balsamic315°–360°~3.5 yearsRelease, surrender, composting the old. Preparation for next cycle.

Progressed New and Full Moon

  • Progressed New Moon: The progressed Moon conjuncts the progressed Sun. Powerful new beginning — one of life's most significant turning points. Happens every ~29.5 years.
  • Progressed Full Moon: The progressed Moon opposes the progressed Sun. Culmination of what was seeded at the last progressed New Moon.

Converse Progressions

Count backward from birth instead of forward. Day 30 before birth = age 30.

Interpretation

Converse progressions reveal pre-birth patterns and karmic/ancestral influences affecting the current life. Use as a supplementary layer — secondary progressions remain primary.

Tertiary Progressions (Day-for-a-Month)

Each day after birth = one lunar month (~27.3 days) of life.

Use Case

Tertiary progressions are faster than secondary progressions and can time events within a given year. The tertiary progressed Moon moves about 1 sign per month of real time.

Quotidian Progressions

Each day after birth = one day of life. Essentially the progressed chart updates daily.

Use Case

Ultra-precise timing within a year already flagged by secondary progressions. The quotidian ASC and MC move about 1° per day and can time events to the day.

Solar Arc Directions

Every planet and point in the chart advances by the same amount — the arc of the progressed Sun (~1° per year).

Calculation

Solar Arc directed position = Natal position + (Progressed Sun − Natal Sun)

Why Solar Arcs Matter

  • Unlike secondary progressions, every planet moves at the same speed
  • This means outer planets (which barely move in progressions) become active
  • Solar Arc Pluto conjunct natal ASC is a life-transforming direction — you would miss this with progressions alone

Key Solar Arc Events

  • SA planet conjunct natal angle (ASC, MC) — major life milestone
  • SA planet conjunct natal planet — that planet's themes are activated
  • Use 1° orb (about 1 year either side of exact)

Draconic Progressions

Apply secondary progression technique to the draconic chart (all positions relative to the North Node).

Interpretation

Reveals soul-level unfolding and karmic timing. Supplementary technique — use after standard progressions.

Prenatal Eclipse

The last solar eclipse before birth. Its sign, degree, and house placement (in the natal chart) indicate a karmic imprint or life theme inherited from the collective.

How to Find It

Search backward from the birth date for the most recent solar eclipse. Note its degree and which natal house it falls in.

Progressed Aspects Calendar

List all progressed-to-natal and progressed-to-progressed aspects forming over a time range.

Format

2026:
Feb P. Moon enters 7th house — partnership focus begins
Mar P. Moon ☌ natal Venus — emotional opening in relationships
Jun P. Sun △ natal Jupiter — confidence and expansion peak
Aug P. Moon □ natal Saturn — emotional challenge, responsibility
  Nov P. Venus ☌ natal MC — love/career alignment

2027:
Jan P. New Moon at 8° Taurus — major new cycle in values/resources
Apr P. Moon enters 8th house — transformation focus begins
Jul SA Pluto ☌ natal ASC — profound personal transformation

Synthesis: Combining Progressions with Transits

The most reliable forecasting combines both:

  1. Progressions set the internal stage — what phase of development are you in?
  2. Transits deliver the external events — what triggers the manifestation?
  3. When both align on the same natal point, that's when life-changing events occur

Example: Progressed Moon conjunct natal Saturn (internal heaviness) + transiting Saturn conjunct natal Moon (external restructuring of emotional life) = major emotional/domestic restructuring.

Anti-Patterns

  • Do NOT interpret progressed outer planets as if they've moved significantly — they haven't
  • Do NOT skip the progressed Moon — it's the single most useful progression
  • Do NOT ignore the progressed lunation cycle — it provides the 30-year life rhythm
  • Do NOT forget solar arcs when assessing outer planet timing
  • Do NOT present progressions as external events — they're internal shifts that attract corresponding outer events
  • Do NOT use wide orbs in progressions — 1° for most aspects, 1°30' max
