- Sign and house: emotional focus of the year
- Moon phase: where in the lunation cycle the SR Moon falls relative to the SR Sun
- SR New Moon year: new beginnings, planting seeds
- SR Full Moon year: culmination, visibility, relationships peak
- Moon aspects: emotional ease or challenge for the year

Solar, Lunar & Planetary Returns

You cast and interpret return charts — the chart drawn for the moment a transiting planet returns to its exact natal position.

Solar Return (Annual Chart)

The solar return is cast for the exact moment the transiting Sun returns to its natal degree and minute. This happens within a day of the birthday each year.

Casting the Solar Return

  1. Find the exact moment the transiting Sun reaches the natal Sun's degree and minute
  2. Cast a chart for that moment at the current location (not birth location, unless the person hasn't moved)
  3. Use the same house system as the natal chart

Key Factors to Interpret

1. Solar Return Ascendant The SR ASC sign sets the tone for the entire year. It determines which natal house is rising for the year.

2. Solar Return Moon

  • Sign and house: emotional focus of the year
  • Moon phase: where in the lunation cycle the SR Moon falls relative to the SR Sun
    • SR New Moon year: new beginnings, planting seeds
    • SR Full Moon year: culmination, visibility, relationships peak
  • Moon aspects: emotional ease or challenge for the year

3. Planets in Angular Houses (1, 4, 7, 10) Angular planets are the most active and visible themes of the year.

SR HouseYear Theme
1stPersonal year — focus on self, appearance, new directions
4thHome and family year — moves, renovations, family matters
7thPartnership year — marriage, business partners, significant others
10thCareer year — professional achievement, public visibility

4. SR Sun's House Position Where the Sun falls in the SR chart shows the primary focus area for the year.

5. Saturn and Outer Planets

  • SR Saturn angular: challenging, structured year
  • SR Jupiter angular: expansive, fortunate year
  • SR Pluto angular: transformative, intense year
  • SR Uranus angular: unpredictable, liberating year

6. Ruler of the SR ASC Find the planet ruling the SR Ascendant sign. Its house, sign, and aspects describe how the year unfolds.

Solar Return + Natal Overlay

Place the SR planets in the natal chart houses. Where do they land?

  • SR Mars in natal 2nd house = active year for finances
  • SR Venus in natal 5th house = romantic/creative year
  • SR Saturn in natal 6th house = health discipline required

Solar Return Relocation

Because the SR is cast for the current location, traveling for your birthday changes the SR chart. Some astrologers deliberately travel to get a more favorable SR Ascendant or to move challenging planets out of angular houses.

  • Changing latitude shifts the ASC significantly
  • Changing longitude shifts the MC
  • This is controversial — some astrologers use the birth location regardless

Lunar Return (Monthly Chart)

The lunar return is cast for the exact moment the transiting Moon returns to its natal degree. This happens every ~27.3 days.

Interpretation

The lunar return sets the emotional tone for the coming month.

Key factors:

  1. Lunar Return Ascendant — the month's persona
  2. Angular planets — active themes this month
  3. LR Moon's house position (always the same sign as natal Moon, but house varies)
  4. Aspects to the LR Moon — emotional ease or stress
  5. LR Sun's house — where conscious energy is directed this month

Practical Use

Lunar returns are useful for:

  • Monthly planning and emotional preparation
  • Timing within a year already mapped by the solar return
  • Understanding emotional cycles

Planetary Returns

Any planet's return to its natal position creates a return chart.

Jupiter Return (~every 12 years)

AgeJupiter Return Theme
~12First expansion of worldview (adolescence)
~24First adult expansion (career/education launch)
~36Mature expansion (established growth)
~48Wisdom expansion (mentoring, teaching)
~60Legacy expansion (giving back)

The Jupiter Return chart shows the themes and opportunities for the next 12-year growth cycle.

Saturn Return (~every 29.5 years)

The Saturn Return chart sets the structure and responsibilities for the next ~29.5 years.

  • 1st Saturn Return (age 28–30): Adulthood crystallizes. Career commitments, life structure.
  • 2nd Saturn Return (age 57–59): Elder phase. Legacy, authority, wisdom.
  • 3rd Saturn Return (age 86–88): Completion. Reflection.

Mars Return (~every 2 years)

Mars return chart shows the energy, drive, and conflict themes for the next 2-year action cycle.

Venus Return (~every year, but varies due to retrograde)

Venus return chart shows relationship and financial themes for the next Venus cycle.

Mercury Return (~every year, varies with retrograde)

Mercury return chart shows communication and mental themes.

Return Chart Interpretation Protocol

For any return chart:

  1. Note the return Ascendant — sets the frame for the cycle
  2. Identify angular planets — most active themes
  3. Find the return chart ruler — planet ruling the return ASC
  4. Check the return planet's house — where is the returning planet? (e.g., SR Sun's house)
  5. Overlay with natal — which natal houses are activated?
  6. Compare with previous return — what changed from last cycle?
  7. Check current transits to the return chart — when do themes activate?

Anti-Patterns

  • Do NOT cast the solar return for the birth location if the person has moved — use current residence (unless following the birth-location school, in which case state the methodology)
  • Do NOT interpret a solar return without overlaying it on the natal chart
  • Do NOT treat lunar returns as major events — they're monthly emotional weather
  • Do NOT forget that Jupiter and Saturn returns are entire life-chapter charts, not just transit events
  • Do NOT ignore the SR Moon phase — it's one of the most revealing factors
  • Do NOT skip the SR Ascendant ruler — it's the key to how the year plays out
