i-ching
Performs I Ching (Book of Changes) readings and hexagram interpretation. Use when the user wants an I Ching consultation, hexagram casting, or wisdom from the Book of Changes. Triggers: "cast an I Ching reading", "I Ching hexagram", "throw coins for I Ching", "Book of Changes reading", "what hexagram did I get", "changing lines", "interpret my hexagram". Covers the three-coin method, 8 trigrams, 64 hexagrams, changing lines, and philosophical integration.
Performs consultations using the I Ching (Yijing), the ancient Chinese Book of Changes. Interprets hexagrams, changing lines, and the transformation from primary to relating hexagram. ## Key Points 1. **Focus on your question.** Hold it clearly in mind. 2. **Throw three coins simultaneously.** Do this 6 times to build 6 lines. 3. **Assign values:** Heads = 3, Tails = 2. 4. **Sum the three coins** for each throw: - **6** (2+2+2) = Old Yin ⚋ (changing broken line — transforms to yang) - **7** (2+2+3) = Young Yang ⚊ (stable solid line) - **8** (3+3+2) = Young Yin ⚋ (stable broken line) - **9** (3+3+3) = Old Yang ⚊ (changing solid line — transforms to yin) 5. **Build from the bottom up.** The first throw is the bottom line (line 1); the sixth throw is the top line (line 6). 6. Old Yin (6) and Old Yang (9) are **changing lines** — they create the relating (second) hexagram. 1. Set aside 1 stalk (never used). Work with 49. 2. Divide the bundle randomly into two piles.

Disclaimer
The I Ching is a philosophical and reflective text with over 3,000 years of history. Readings here are offered as contemplative guidance, not as prediction or supernatural counsel. The I Ching is a mirror for the mind — it reflects your situation back to you through symbolic language.
How to Cast a Hexagram
The Three-Coin Method
This is the most common modern method. Use three coins (traditionally Chinese coins; any coin works).
- Focus on your question. Hold it clearly in mind.
- Throw three coins simultaneously. Do this 6 times to build 6 lines.
- Assign values: Heads = 3, Tails = 2.
- Sum the three coins for each throw:
- 6 (2+2+2) = Old Yin ⚋ (changing broken line — transforms to yang)
- 7 (2+2+3) = Young Yang ⚊ (stable solid line)
- 8 (3+3+2) = Young Yin ⚋ (stable broken line)
- 9 (3+3+3) = Old Yang ⚊ (changing solid line — transforms to yin)
- Build from the bottom up. The first throw is the bottom line (line 1); the sixth throw is the top line (line 6).
- Old Yin (6) and Old Yang (9) are changing lines — they create the relating (second) hexagram.
The Yarrow Stalk Method (Traditional)
The original and more meditative method uses 50 yarrow stalks. The process is longer and more ritualistic:
- Set aside 1 stalk (never used). Work with 49.
- Divide the bundle randomly into two piles.
- Take one stalk from the right pile, place between fingers.
- Count off the left pile by fours, setting aside remainders.
- Count off the right pile by fours, setting aside remainders.
- This constitutes one change. Three changes produce one line.
- Repeat the full process 6 times for 6 lines.
The yarrow stalk method produces different probability distributions than coins — changing lines are rarer, which some practitioners consider more accurate.
The Eight Trigrams (Bagua)
Each hexagram is composed of two trigrams — a lower (inner) and upper (outer).
| Trigram | Name | Symbol | Element | Quality | Family Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ☰ | Qian (Heaven) | Three solid lines | Metal/Heaven | Creative, strong, initiating | Father |
| ☱ | Dui (Lake) | Broken over two solid | Lake | Joyous, open, expressive | Youngest Daughter |
| ☲ | Li (Fire) | Solid-broken-solid | Fire | Clinging, illuminating, clarity | Middle Daughter |
| ☳ | Zhen (Thunder) | Solid under two broken | Thunder | Arousing, shocking, initiating movement | Eldest Son |
| ☴ | Xun (Wind/Wood) | Broken under two solid | Wind/Wood | Gentle, penetrating, adaptable | Eldest Daughter |
| ☵ | Kan (Water) | Broken-solid-broken | Water | Abysmal, dangerous, deep, flowing | Middle Son |
| ☶ | Gen (Mountain) | Two broken under solid | Mountain | Stillness, stopping, meditation | Youngest Son |
| ☷ | Kun (Earth) | Three broken lines | Earth | Receptive, yielding, nurturing | Mother |
Trigram Interactions
The lower trigram represents the inner world (personal, subjective, foundation). The upper trigram represents the outer world (external, objective, manifestation). The relationship between them shapes the hexagram's meaning.
Key Hexagrams — Selected Interpretations
Hexagram 1 — Qian (The Creative) ☰☰
Heaven over Heaven. Pure yang energy. Initiating power, primal creativity, strength, persistence. The dragon rising. Act with strength and integrity. Supreme success if one perseveres.
Hexagram 2 — Kun (The Receptive) ☰☷ corrected: ☷☷
Earth over Earth. Pure yin energy. Receptivity, devotion, yielding, nurturing support. The mare — strength through gentleness. Follow rather than lead. Support brings success.
Hexagram 11 — Tai (Peace) ☷ over ☰
Earth above, Heaven below. The creative moves upward, the receptive draws downward — they meet. Harmony, prosperity, great good fortune. A time of flourishing.
Hexagram 12 — Pi (Standstill/Stagnation) ☰ over ☷
Heaven above, Earth below. They move apart. Stagnation, blockage, withdrawal. Inferior forces prevail. Retreat inward; do not struggle against the current.
Hexagram 15 — Qian (Modesty) ☷ over ☶
Earth over Mountain. The mountain humbles itself beneath the earth. Modesty brings success in all things. The universe balances — what is full is emptied, what is modest is filled.
Hexagram 23 — Bo (Splitting Apart)
Mountain over Earth. Deterioration, things falling away. Not a time for action. Let what must fall, fall. Endure.
Hexagram 24 — Fu (Return/The Turning Point)
Earth over Thunder. After darkness, light returns. The winter solstice hexagram. A new cycle begins. Rest, then move with the returning energy.
Hexagram 29 — Kan (The Abysmal/Water) ☵☵
Water over Water. Danger doubled. Flow through peril as water flows — do not resist, maintain sincerity. In danger, remain true. Trust the current.
Hexagram 30 — Li (The Clinging/Fire) ☲☲
Fire over Fire. Illumination, clarity, dependence on fuel. Cling to what is good. Brightness requires something to sustain it. Tend the source.
Hexagram 42 — Yi (Increase)
Wind over Thunder. A time of increase and expansion. Those above enrich those below. Undertake great things now. Generous action brings great good fortune.
Hexagram 44 — Gou (Coming to Meet)
Heaven over Wind. An unexpected encounter. Something approaches unbidden. Be aware of what is entering your life — it may be powerful and not easily controlled.
Hexagram 49 — Ge (Revolution/Molting)
Lake over Fire. Radical change, revolution, shedding the old skin. When the time is right, transformation is necessary. Believe in the change you are undergoing.
Hexagram 50 — Ding (The Cauldron)
Fire over Wind. The sacred vessel. Nourishment of the worthy, cultural refinement, transformation of the raw into the cooked. Supreme good fortune.
Hexagram 63 — Ji Ji (After Completion)
Water over Fire. Everything in its right place — but beware. When all is in order, disorder begins to creep in. Maintain vigilance at the peak.
Hexagram 64 — Wei Ji (Before Completion)
Fire over Water. Not yet across the river. Everything is still in transition. Careful effort is needed. The end is in sight but not yet reached. Caution and hope coexist.
Changing Lines
Changing lines (Old Yin = 6, Old Yang = 9) are the most dynamic and specific part of a reading.
How They Work
- The primary hexagram shows the current situation.
- Each changing line carries a specific text and meaning — read only the changing lines.
- Transform each changing line to its opposite (yin becomes yang, yang becomes yin).
- The resulting hexagram is the relating hexagram — it shows where the situation is evolving toward.
Reading Priority
- No changing lines: The primary hexagram's overall judgment applies fully. The situation is stable.
- One changing line: This is the most focused advice — read its specific line text carefully.
- Two changing lines: Both are relevant; the upper line carries slightly more weight.
- Three changing lines: Read the overall judgments of both hexagrams.
- Four or more changing lines: Focus on the lines that are NOT changing — they represent the stable core.
- All lines changing: The transformation itself is the message. Read both hexagram judgments.
Reading Method
Formulating Questions
- Open-ended works best: "What should I understand about my career situation?" rather than "Will I get the job?"
- Avoid yes/no: The I Ching gives wisdom, not binary answers.
- Be sincere: Tradition holds that the I Ching responds to genuine inquiry, not idle curiosity.
- One question per casting: Do not re-cast if you dislike the answer.
Interpretation Framework
- Read the primary hexagram judgment — the overall situation.
- Read the image — the trigram relationship offers a metaphor for action.
- Read the changing line texts — specific, pointed advice.
- Read the relating hexagram judgment — where things are heading.
- Synthesize — weave these layers into a coherent response to the question.
Core Philosophy
Yin and Yang
All of reality oscillates between yin (receptive, dark, yielding, cool) and yang (creative, bright, firm, warm). Neither is superior. Both are necessary. The I Ching tracks their dance.
Change as the Only Constant
The book's title means "changes." Its central teaching is that everything transforms. Clinging to any fixed state causes suffering. Flowing with change is wisdom.
Wu Wei — Non-Forcing Action
Aligned with Daoist philosophy, the I Ching often counsels acting without forcing — responding to the time rather than imposing your will upon it. Timing is everything.
The Superior Person (Junzi)
Many line texts describe how the "superior person" (one who cultivates virtue) acts. This is not elitism — it is an aspirational model. How would the wisest version of you respond?
Integrating I Ching Wisdom
For Modern Decision-Making
- Use the hexagram as a framework for reflection, not as an instruction manual.
- The I Ching excels at revealing what you already sense but have not articulated.
- When facing a dilemma, the reading often clarifies which option aligns with your deeper values.
- Record readings in a journal. Patterns emerge over time.
Conducting an AI Reading
- Ask the querent for their question.
- Simulate a coin-toss casting (6 throws, each producing a value of 6, 7, 8, or 9).
- Build the hexagram from bottom to top.
- Identify the primary hexagram and any changing lines.
- If changing lines exist, derive the relating hexagram.
- Interpret: primary judgment, image, changing lines, relating hexagram.
- Synthesize into clear, reflective guidance.
- Offer the querent a question for further contemplation.
- Include the disclaimer.
Cultural Respect
The I Ching is one of the oldest texts in continuous use, deeply rooted in Chinese philosophy, Confucianism, and Daoism. Approach it with the respect due a living philosophical tradition. Do not trivialize it as a novelty fortune-telling device. Honor its depth.
