Color science in compositing is about maintaining the integrity of the image data throughout every operation in your pipeline. Every pixel value represents a physical quantity — the amount of light captured by the camera sensor — and your job is to preserve, manipulate, and augment that data without introducing mathematical errors that manifest as visual artifacts. The most fundamental principle is working in scene-referred linear light: all compositing math (merging, grading, blurring, adding light effects) should be performed in a color space where pixel values are proportional to scene luminance and where the encoding is linear (not logarithmic or gamma-encoded).

The distinction between scene-referred and display-referred workflows is critical. A scene-referred pipeline (like ACES) treats pixel values as representing the physical scene: values above 1.0 represent bright highlights, and the full dynamic range of the camera is preserved throughout the pipeline. A display-referred pipeline clamps values to the 0-1 range early, losing highlight information. Modern VFX compositing must be scene-referred because CG renders and live-action cameras both capture wide dynamic range, and operations like adding light effects (fire, explosions, glowing objects) require values above 1.0 to behave correctly.

ACES (Academy Color Encoding System) has become the industry standard for color management in VFX because it solves the fundamental interoperability problem: every camera records in a different color space (ARRI LogC/AWG, RED REDWideGamut/Log3G10, Sony S-Log3/S-Gamut3), every renderer outputs in a different color space, and every display device expects a different encoding. ACES provides a common scene-referred color space (ACEScg for compositing, ACES2065-1 for archival) into which all sources are converted, processed, and then transformed to the appropriate output display space via standardized Output Transforms (formerly RRTs and ODTs).

Key Techniques

1. ACES Pipeline Setup in Nuke

Configure Nuke's color management for ACES using OCIO. Set the OCIO config to the ACES config file (typically aces_1.2 or later) in Nuke's preferences or via the OCIO environment variable. Set the working space to ACEScg (AP1 primaries, linear encoding) — this is the compositing color space. On each Read node, set the color space to match the source: ARRI LogC (EI800) / ARRI Wide Gamut for ARRI footage, RED Log3G10 / REDWideGamutRGB for RED footage, Output - sRGB for sRGB textures, and ACES - ACEScg for CG renders delivered in ACEScg. Nuke will automatically convert each input to the working space. Set the Viewer process to the appropriate Output Transform: ACES/Rec.709 for SDR monitoring, ACES/P3-D65 (108 nits) for theatrical projection preview. On Write nodes, set the output color space to match the delivery requirement — typically ACEScg or ACES2065-1 for delivery to DI, or the show-specific delivery spec.

2. Understanding and Applying LUTs

A LUT (Look-Up Table) is a mapping from one color space to another, stored as a discrete set of input-output value pairs. LUTs come in two categories that must never be confused: technical LUTs that perform color space conversions (like camera log to linear) and creative LUTs that apply a specific look or grade. Technical LUTs should be replaced by proper OCIO color space conversions whenever possible, as they provide mathematically exact transforms rather than interpolated approximations. Creative LUTs from the DI department — the "show LUT" — should be applied at the Viewer level (not baked into the composite) so you see what the colorist sees during review but deliver ungraded scene-referred data. In Nuke, use the Vectorfield node to load .cube LUT files and the OCIOFileTransform for other formats. For CDL (Color Decision List) values from the DI, use the OCIOCDLTransform node, which applies slope, offset, power, and saturation as per the ASC CDL standard.

3. Gamut Mapping and HDR Considerations

Modern delivery increasingly requires multiple output formats: SDR Rec.709 for broadcast, HDR Rec.2020 PQ for streaming, P3-D65 for theatrical. Each has a different gamut (range of representable colors) and dynamic range. Colors that are within gamut in Rec.2020 may be out of gamut in Rec.709, and values that are visible in HDR may clip in SDR. When compositing for multi-format delivery, work in a wide-gamut linear space (ACEScg encompasses both Rec.709 and P3 and most of Rec.2020) and let the Output Transform handle gamut mapping for each deliverable. However, you must check your composite under each Output Transform to ensure nothing clips or shifts unacceptably. Problematic areas include highly saturated CG effects (neon lights, magic effects, laser beams) whose saturated colors may gamut-clip to unexpected hues in narrower output spaces. Use Nuke's Gamut Compress node (or the ACES Reference Gamut Compression) to bring out-of-gamut colors into range without destroying their perceived hue. For HDR-specific compositing, be aware that highlight detail visible in HDR will be lost in SDR trim — plan your effects to work across both dynamic ranges.

Best Practices

Anti-Patterns

  • Compositing in log or gamma-encoded color space: Merge operations, blurs, and light addition produce mathematically incorrect results in non-linear color spaces. Two 50% gray values added in sRGB produce a different (wrong) result than the same addition in linear light.

  • Baking the show LUT or display transform into the composited image: The show LUT is a preview tool. Baking it into delivered images means the DI colorist receives already-graded footage that they cannot cleanly reverse, losing the creative flexibility that a scene-referred delivery provides.

  • Confusing input transforms with output transforms: An input transform converts camera-native data to the working space. An output transform converts from the working space to a display. Applying an output transform as an input (or vice versa) produces wildly incorrect results.

  • Ignoring gamut boundaries for highly saturated CG effects: Saturated colors that exceed the destination gamut will clip to unexpected hues. A deep blue CG laser that looks correct in ACEScg may shift toward purple when clipped in Rec.709. Always check problematic colors under the narrowest target output.

  • Using 8-bit or low-bit-depth intermediate files in a scene-referred pipeline: Scene-referred data with values above 1.0 and below 0.0 requires floating-point storage. Writing intermediate results to 8-bit PNG or JPEG clamps and quantizes the data, destroying dynamic range and producing banding.
