Deep compositing solves one of the fundamental challenges of multi-element VFX: correct occlusion between independently rendered elements without manual holdout mattes. In traditional flat compositing, when a CG creature walks behind a CG tree, someone must create a holdout matte for the tree and apply it to the creature. With dozens of CG elements interacting in a complex scene, the holdout matte management becomes exponentially difficult. Deep compositing eliminates this problem by storing not just a single color and alpha per pixel, but an ordered list of color and alpha samples at different depths. When two deep images are merged, the samples are interleaved by depth, producing correct occlusion automatically.

The power of deep compositing comes with significant costs. Deep images are substantially larger than flat images — a single deep EXR frame can be hundreds of megabytes to several gigabytes, compared to tens of megabytes for a flat EXR. Processing deep images requires more memory and computation. Not all compositing operations can be performed on deep data; many require flattening first. A skilled deep compositor understands these tradeoffs and designs workflows that use deep data strategically — for the specific operations where it provides genuine value (merging, holdouts, depth-based effects) — and flattens to traditional images as early as possible for operations that do not benefit from deep data (color corrections, blurs, grain).

Deep data is most valuable in environments with many overlapping CG elements: forests, cityscapes, crowds, debris fields, and volumetric effects like clouds, smoke, and fire. In these scenarios, the time saved by eliminating manual holdout mattes and the accuracy of automatic depth-correct occlusion more than justify the storage and processing overhead. For simpler scenarios with only two or three elements at clearly separated depths, traditional flat compositing with simple holdout mattes is often faster and more efficient.

Key Techniques

1. Deep Rendering and Data Preparation

Configure your 3D renderer to output deep EXR files with per-sample depth and alpha. In Arnold, enable "Output Deep EXR" in the render settings and specify the deep subpixel merge tolerance — lower values produce more accurate but larger files. In RenderMan, use the "deepexr" display driver. Each renderer produces slightly different deep data characteristics, so understand your renderer's specific output. In Nuke, read deep images with the DeepRead node. The DeepInfo node displays statistics about the deep data: samples per pixel, depth range, and total sample count. Use DeepRecolor to attach flat AOV passes to deep data — render a deep alpha and depth from the 3D package, then use DeepRecolor to associate the flat beauty and AOV renders with the deep samples. This approach is more storage-efficient than rendering full deep beauty passes, which store color at every depth sample.

2. Deep Merging and Holdout Workflows

The DeepMerge node in Nuke combines two deep images by interleaving their depth samples. Connect multiple CG elements rendered as deep images, and DeepMerge produces a correctly occluded composite without any manual holdout work. For a scene with a CG building, CG trees in front, and a CG character walking between them, simply DeepMerge all three elements and the depth ordering is resolved automatically per pixel per frame. The DeepHoldout node handles occlusion against live-action elements: provide a deep image of the CG scene and a depth map representing the live-action plate's geometry (generated from lidar scans, photogrammetry, or a simple proxy mesh rendered from the tracked camera), and DeepHoldout will remove any deep samples that are behind the plate geometry. This is how CG elements are correctly occluded by real-world objects without manual rotoscoping of the plate elements.

3. Flattening Strategies and Hybrid Workflows

The DeepToImage node flattens deep data back to a standard 2D image, and where you place this operation in your node graph is a critical workflow decision. Flatten as late as possible for merging operations (so deep merging can do its occlusion work) but as early as possible for operations that do not benefit from deep data. A typical hybrid workflow: DeepRead all CG elements, DeepMerge them together, apply DeepHoldout against the plate geometry, then DeepToImage to flatten. From this point forward, work with the flattened image using standard 2D compositing: grade, add atmospheric effects, apply lens effects, and merge with the live-action plate. Use DeepExpression for per-sample operations before flattening — for example, deep.front > 500 ? 0 : alpha zeros out alpha for samples beyond 500 units, creating a depth-based matte without flattening. The DeepTransform node applies 2D transforms to deep images while preserving sample data, useful for repo moves on deep-composited elements.

Best Practices

  • Use DeepRecolor rather than rendering full deep beauty passes whenever possible; it reduces render time and storage by an order of magnitude while providing equivalent compositing control.

  • Carrying deep data through the entire compositing pipeline: Deep images are expensive to process. Running color corrections, blurs, or grain operations on deep data wastes enormous computation on per-sample operations that produce no benefit over flat processing.

  • Ignoring deep sample count explosion in volumetric renders: Volumetric renders (smoke, clouds) can produce thousands of deep samples per pixel. Without appropriate merge tolerances and sample capping, file sizes become unmanageable and processing times explode.

  • Neglecting to verify deep merge results against expected occlusion: Deep merging can produce artifacts at depth boundaries, especially when samples from different elements share very similar depth values. Always inspect deep merge results at critical occlusion boundaries.

  • Using deep holdouts without accurate plate geometry: The quality of a DeepHoldout depends entirely on the accuracy of the depth representation of the plate. A rough proxy mesh will produce incorrect occlusion at object boundaries, requiring manual cleanup that negates the advantage of using deep data.
