Stereoscopic compositing is not simply doing everything twice — once for the left eye and once for the right. It is compositing with an additional dimension: perceived depth. Every element in the composite exists at a specific depth relative to the screen plane, determined by the horizontal disparity between its position in the left and right eye views. Positive disparity (right-eye image shifted right relative to left) places the element behind the screen. Negative disparity (right-eye shifted left) places it in front of the screen. Zero disparity places it at the screen plane. Managing these depth relationships is as important as managing color, lighting, and motion.
The interaxial distance (the separation between the two camera positions) and the convergence point (the depth at which the two cameras' optical axes cross, producing zero disparity) define the stereo characteristics of the shot. These parameters are set on set during filming and in the 3D package for CG elements, but they often require adjustment in compositing. The stereo compositor must understand the "depth budget" — the range of disparities that a given display format can reproduce without causing viewer discomfort. IMAX 3D, RealD theatrical, and home 3D television each have different maximum comfortable disparities, and the composite must respect these limits.
Stereo-specific artifacts — vertical misalignment between eyes, color differences between eyes, edge violations where a foreground element's stereo edge extends beyond its monocular edge, and temporal disparity flicker — are not just visual errors but causes of physical discomfort. The human visual system is extraordinarily sensitive to discrepancies between left and right eye images because these discrepancies do not occur in natural viewing. Even a half-pixel vertical misalignment or a subtle color difference between eyes can cause headaches and eye strain over the duration of a feature film. Identifying and correcting these artifacts is a primary responsibility of the stereo compositor.
Key Techniques
1. Disparity Map Generation and Application
Disparity maps describe the per-pixel horizontal shift between the left and right eye views. In Nuke, use the Ocula O_DisparityGenerator (or similar stereo analysis tools) to compute disparity maps from a stereo plate pair. The resulting forward and reverse disparity maps allow you to synthesize one eye view from the other — a technique called "disparity warping" that is invaluable for stereo paint, roto, and element insertion. To insert a 2D element at a specific stereo depth, place it identically in both eye views then use an STMap node driven by the disparity map (scaled by the desired depth factor) to shift the element in one eye relative to the other. For CG elements, render separate left and right eye views from the stereo camera rig; never attempt to synthesize a stereo pair from a single mono CG render for hero elements, as the resulting parallax will lack correct occlusion and perspective changes between views.
2. Stereo Roto, Paint, and Correction Workflows
When rotoscoping stereo plates, work primarily on the hero eye (typically left) and use disparity warping to transfer the roto shapes to the other eye, then refine. In Nuke, the Ocula O_InteraxialShifter or a disparity-driven STMap can warp roto mattes from one eye to the other. For paint and cleanup work, paint on the hero eye, then use the disparity map to warp the painted region to the other eye. This ensures temporal and spatial consistency between eyes. For geometric corrections (vertical alignment, rotation alignment, zoom differences between stereo cameras), use Nuke's stereo alignment tools or the Ocula O_Solver. These tools analyze corresponding features in both eye views and compute the correction transforms needed to bring the views into proper stereo alignment. Vertical disparity (vertical misalignment between corresponding points in left and right eyes) must be reduced to sub-pixel levels; the human eye cannot fuse images with significant vertical disparity.
3. Depth Budget Management and Convergence Adjustment
The depth budget defines the comfortable range of screen-space disparities for the target exhibition format. For theatrical RealD presentations, the commonly accepted comfortable range is approximately -2% to +3% of screen width for sustained elements (brief transients can exceed this). The stereo compositor must verify that all elements in the composite fall within this budget. In Nuke, use the anaglyph view mode or a side-by-side view with a disparity measurement tool to check element disparities. Convergence shifts (horizontal offset applied equally to both views) move the entire depth range forward or backward relative to the screen plane. Use a Transform node on both views with equal and opposite horizontal translations to adjust convergence. If a CG element's stereo depth does not match the plate at its contact point with a live-action surface, adjust the interaxial of the CG element by horizontally shifting one eye relative to the other by the needed pixel count. Always check convergence changes at the shot level and the sequence level to avoid jarring depth jumps between cuts.

Synthesizing hero stereo CG from a single mono render using depth-based warping: Depth-based view synthesis cannot reproduce correct occlusion (what is hidden behind an object in one eye but visible in the other). CG elements must be rendered as proper stereo pairs from two camera positions.

Treating stereo compositing as an afterthought: Stereo must be considered from the beginning of the shot. A mono composite that is "converted" to stereo after completion invariably produces inferior results compared to one built in stereo from the start, because depth-dependent decisions (element ordering, atmospheric depth, focus) are baked in incorrectly.
